A multi-line open-text field for longer written answers — comments, explanations, and detailed feedback.
What respondents see#
A multi-line textarea that grows with the response. The same Format-based validation available on Short Text applies here too, though Long Text is typically left as plain Text for open-ended comments.
When to use it#
- Open-ended "why" or "tell us more" follow-ups.
- Detailed feedback or verbatim comments.
- Any answer expected to run more than one line.
Configuring it in the builder#
- Open the Validation tab.
- Choose a Format restriction, or leave it as plain Text (the common case for Long Text).
- Set a minimum character count to require a substantive answer.
Settings reference#
| Setting | What it controls | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Text, Email Address, Phone Number, Postal/ZIP Code, or Number | Text (no restriction) |
| Minimum Characters | Fewest characters accepted, plain Text format only | 0 (no minimum) |
| Allowed Range (Min/Max) | Numeric bounds, Number format only | No min/max |
| Required | Whether the respondent must enter a value before continuing | Off |
Logic support#
Long Text answers support Answered, Not answered, Contains, and Does not contain. See Logic, Flow & Conditions for the full operator tables.
Good to know#
- Set Minimum Characters to discourage low-effort one-word answers on open-ends you plan to analyze qualitatively.
- Tap & Talk and Slide & Speak (see StorySync AI Qual) are built on Long Text under the hood, pairing the same open-text storage with a voice-recording interface.
